The Tyndall local carbon budget setting tool is now offline
Ongoing research support for local authorities in addressing climate change can accessed through the Tyndall Centre website and the centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations (CAST). This includes a co-benefits decision support tool developed to support ensuring decision making across authority remits aligns with climate goals. A briefing note on how local authorities can respond to exceeding their carbon budgets and milestone goals can be found here.
The discontinuation of the target setting tool has no effect on the carbon budgets already adopted by local authorities. These remain a relevant articulation of the change and challenge for a fair contribution to the UNFCCC’s Paris Climate Change Agreement - to keep global temperature change to well below 2˚C and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5˚C.
The tool was launched in 2019 to enable UK local authorities to set science-based climate change targets based on local carbon budgets. It was developed for setting targets in 2020, and an estimated 200 local authorities have used the tool in some way to inform local climate action around this time.
Thank you to everyone who has supported and made use of this work.
